Introducing the all-new Mazda CX-80

The all-new Mazda CX-80 is set to arrive in the UK in January 2025, bringing a fresh wave of excitement to the SUV market. As Mazda’s largest and most spacious SUV yet, it is designed for greater comfort, practicality, and luxury.

In this article, we uncover all we know so far about this highly anticipated vehicle.

Design

Exterior Design of the Mazda CX-80

The Mazda CX-80 is 25cm longer, 25 cm taller, and has a 25cm longer wheelbase compared to the  , giving it a more commanding presence on the road.

The front of the CX-80 features a bold grille and sleek LED headlights. Additionally, stretched side windows with redesigned window mouldings enhance the side profile, and roof rails add a touch of practicality, perfect for those who need extra carrying capability.

At the rear, the CX-80 features a larger tailgate and bumper, making loading and unloading easier. The redesigned rear bumper eliminates faux exhaust pieces, so the CX-80 offers a much cleaner and more refined appearance.

There’s also been some new colours introduced, including Artisan Red and Melting Copper. The Mazda CX-80 will also be offered in nine other stylish body colours, like other models in the Mazda new car range, including: Rhodium White, Jet Black, Deep Crystal Blue, and Machine Grey.

Interior Design of the Mazda CX-80

Inside, the Mazda CX-80 offers a touch of luxury as well as functionality. It features high-quality materials, including Nappa leather seats and Japanese maple wood accents. The excellent build quality ensures premium quality throughout the cabin.

A key highlight of the CX-80’s design is its spacious interior, which offers flexible seating arrangements. You can choose from a seven-seat layout with a middle-row bench or a six-seat version with captain’s chairs and a fixed centre armrest.

Unlike many modern cars that rely heavily on touchscreens, the new CX-80 retains physical buttons and dials for essential functions like air conditioning in true Mazda style. This design choice makes it easier and safer to adjust settings while driving.

Additional features include a wide centre armrest with generous storage, multiple USB ports, and a wireless charging pad inside.

Moreover, the Mazda CX-80’s rear doors are significantly larger and open wider than those on the CX-60, providing easier access to the third row. The third row also offers plenty of legroom, making it suitable for adults and perfect for travelling with children.

Getting in and out couldn’t be easier with the “One Touch Walk-In” feature. Just push a button, and the second row of seats fold down and move out of the way, alleviating the hassle and effort that is often required with many other cars.

You can also enjoy the luxury of a large panoramic sunroof that lets in plenty of natural light, leaving the cabin feeling much more spacious and open. This feature also treats passengers to a bright and airy atmosphere on every journey.

How Big is the Boot on the Mazda CX-80?

The new Mazda CX-80 offers a spacious and versatile boot space to accommodate various needs. With all three rows of seats in use, the boot space is 258 litres. When the third row is folded down, the capacity increases to 687 litres. For maximum cargo space, folding down both the second and third rows yields a substantial 1,971 litres, making it adaptable for family trips.

Engine and Performance

Powertrain Options

The Mazda CX-80 offers two efficient powertrain options: a diesel variant and a plug-in hybrid variant. Both are designed to balance power and fuel economy.

Diesel

The diesel option features a 3.3-litre e-Skyactiv D incline six-cylinder engine, which delivers high torque across the rev range, ensuring responsive power delivery. Paired with Mazda’s M Hybrid system (“M” standing for “Mild Hybrid”), it helps to lower CO2 and NOx emissions, meaning it is still an extremely eco-friendly choice.

The 8-speed automatic transmission enhances acceleration and provides smooth gear shifts, ensuring a fun and enjoyable drive. For those who are seeking impressive performance with lower emissions, the diesel variant of the CX-80 is an excellent pick.

Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV)

The Plug-In hybrid variant combines a petrol engine with an electric motor. When the battery runs low, the petrol engine automatically takes over, so you do not need to worry about range. Charging is also flexible, whether at home overnight or at public stations. With the plug-in hybrid system you can enjoy the sporty electric acceleration, making driving fun as well as efficient.

Technology

As expected, the Mazda CX-80 is packed with exciting technology, all designed to make your life easier while driving.

Infotainment
The CX-80 has the latest MZD Connect infotainment system with a 12.3-inch display. This system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, making it easy to connect your phone and access your apps, navigation, and media. The system is operated via a rotary dial on the centre console, allowing for safe and easy control while driving. When you are parked, the display functions are touchscreen too.

BOSE Premium Sound System
If you love your music, you’re going to love the BOSE premium sound system in the CX-80. With 12 high-performance speakers and a subwoofer, the system features innovative tech like Bose Centerpoint to create a surround sound experience. The speakers are effectively placed so your favourite tunes sound incredible wherever you’re seated in the car.

Climate Control
Tri-zone climate control allows personalised temperature settings for the driver, front passenger, and rear passengers. This ensures everyone onboard is comfortable throughout the journey, regardless of the weather outside. The rear seats also feature heated and cooled options, adding a touch of luxury for passengers in the back.

Alexa Integration
The CX-80 also introduces the convenience of Alexa integration, so drivers can use voice commands to interact with their car. This can be used to check the weather, control smart home devices, and more.

Driver Personalisation System
There’s a driver personalisation system that remembers your individual settings for seat position, climate control, and other preferences. Based on your profile, it automatically adjusts everything to your liking.

360 View Monitor
The CX-80’s 360-view monitor makes parking in tight spaces easier. Four cameras give you a full view of the car, showing different angles on the infotainment screen. It is also equipped with front and rear parking sensors to make parking less stressful.

Safety

Like other models in the Mazda lineup, the new Mazda CX-80 comes with fantastic safety features.

It includes a Driver Monitoring System that uses an infrared camera to detect signs of driver fatigue, alerting the driver if they appear drowsy or inattentive. There is also Smart Brake Support for detecting vehicles while reversing, an Emergency Lane-Keeping System to help keep the car centred in its lane, Blind Spot Monitoring, and Vehicle Exit Warning to improve safety when changing lanes and exiting the vehicle.
